Note

Anthony was educated at Cambridge and was ordained priest in 1533. He was in the service of Henry VIII's chief minster, Thomas Cromwell, after whose fall from grace, he then became chaplain to the king. He was appointed a master in Chancery in 1544 and became a member of The Council of the North in 1550 and, like his elder brother, was one of the Commissioners of Henry VIII for visiting monasteries. After his brother's death, he was granted the buildings and land of Newburgh Priory, Coxwold, West Riding of Yorkshire. Described by Surtees as a prudent, wary man who laid the foundations of the fortunes of his family.
