Note

John’s heir. In 1579 James Dowman, the grandson of Christopher, was lord of the manor of Newnham.
In the chancel of the church there still remains a brass effigy, representing a lady and her children,
with the following inscription :
"Here lyeth Joane Dowman, ye wife of James Dowman who was daughter & heire of Henry Gowshall,
sonne and heir of Robert Gowshall, of Beford in Holderness, in ye countrye of Yorke,
Esqr., Which Joane dyed ye Xth daye of November 1607 in yer LXI year of her age having 7 children lyving,
viz: one sonne and 6 daughters."
His arms were

  • Azure on a fesse engrailed between 3 garbs or on this 3 birds close of the field, beaked and membered gules.-
    (vide "Visitation of Hertfordshire", and "Cluckbuck's History" and Harl. MSS., 6769.)
