Colonel Thomas Dolman

Thomas Dolman is certainly the founder of the Dutch branch of the Dolman.

The genealogical records do not know this Thomas Dolman who never appears in the list of Marmaduke Dolman's children by Anne Shaw. However, various historical documents describe Colonel Thomas Dolman as the brother-in-law of Colonel Henry Lillingstone, consort of Elizabeth Dolman and father of the famous General Luke Lillingston : «Luke Lilligston, army officer, was the son of Colonel Henry Lillingstone and his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Marmaduke Dolman of Bottesford, Lincolnshire, and sister of Colonel Thomas Dolman of the Anglo-Dutch brigade.»

Henry Lillingstone and Thomas Dolman were both colonels in the Anglo-Dutch Brigade.

The reorganisation of the seven regiments into four Dutch regiments can be summed up as follows:
1. the three Scots regiments were converted into three Dutch regiments, under the same colonels.
2. the four English regiments were replaced by one single Dutch regiment under Thomas Dolman.

Thomas Dolman took the oath and commanded a new Dutch regiment from 1665 until 1672. In 1676 he became colonel of the 2nd English Regiment in Dutch service.

Many of Cromwell's Parlimentarians, such as Colonel Dolman, left England and joined the Dutch army and navy. In 1667, led by van Ghent, now an admiral, and their new commander, the Englishman Colonel Thomas Dolman, the Regiment de Marine played a prominent part in the large Dutch raid, the "Raid on the Medway" on England (10–14 June). See more on Raid on the Medway on Wikipedia.
The Korps' battle honour "Chatham" is one of the few ever won on British soil by a foreign unit. The July 2nd attack on Landguard fort near Harwich, performed by 1.500 Mariniers after landing at Woodrich was beaten off by the fort's garrison.
14 August 1676 : With a slash of his sword, the tall officer signalled his Dutch troops forward. By doing so Thomas Dolman had also signalled his own death, for a marksman had chosen him as his main target.
He left one son, also named Thomas, who also served in the Dutch troops.
